Risk Appetite Only Works When It Shows Up

Risk appetite is not a statement of aspiration. It is a set of choices that should be visible in actual credit decisions.

Risk appetite becomes credible when it changes what the institution is willing to approve, on what terms, with what evidence and under whose authority.

From policy to behavior

Policy can define boundaries, but it cannot make the decision. Risk appetite becomes operational when it affects transaction structure, approval authority, limits, exceptions, pricing, covenants, monitoring and escalation.

Committee behavior is evidence

The questions a credit committee asks are one of the clearest indicators of whether risk appetite is real. Effective challenge targets the weakest assumption, the downside, the structure and what would cause the institution to regret the approval. Signature-only governance restates the memo instead of testing the decision.

Exceptions reveal the institution

Exceptions are not merely policy events. Repeated exceptions can reveal the institution’s actual risk appetite more accurately than the written statement. The governance discipline is to see the pattern, understand why it is occurring, and decide whether the institution is deliberately choosing that risk.

Credit Judgment Principle
The objective is not simply better analysis. It is better credit decisions.
