Credit Analysis Is Not Credit Judgment

Technical accuracy is necessary. It is not the same thing as a credit conclusion.

The number is an input. The conclusion is a judgment, and judgment is where accountability lives.

Analysis is not judgment

Credit analysis organizes evidence. Credit judgment gives that evidence meaning in the context of a decision. An analyst can calculate leverage correctly, build a sound cash-flow model and identify every relevant ratio, yet still fail to answer the question the institution actually has to decide.

The risk is stopping at description

The strongest credit work moves beyond what changed to why it changed, whether the change is sustainable, what it means for repayment, and what would have to be true for the conclusion to be wrong. A complete file can still contain an incomplete decision.

Make the unanswered question visible

The most dangerous weakness in a credit file is often not a calculation error. It is the material question everyone assumes somebody else has already considered. Ratios create precision. Judgment determines whether that precision matters to repayment.

The objective is not simply better analysis. It is better credit decisions.
